All of it is free and open to the public.

Come on out, tune up, warm up your vocal cords and picking fingers and we’ll make some music on Wednesday, June 21 st from 6pm to 8pm. See you there!!!

Ronan Tynan Concert – Internationally Acclaimed Irish Tenor

Spend the afternoon with the internationally acclaimed Irish Tenor, Ronan Tynan

On February 12, 2017 at 2:00pm, Assumption Church and Academy will be hosting Ronan at Receptions Conference Center. Willis Music Florence is proud to be a sponsor! For more information, call Linda Gray at 859-485-3800 ext 0 or 631-813-8597

From ronantynan.net:

Ronan Tynan is truly a modern day “Renaissance Man.” Faced with numerous challenges throughout his well documented life, he has persevered with enormous passion and determination. He attributes his success to his faith and the knowledge that the Man Above guides him through every door he opens. Introduced to international audiences as a member of the Irish Tenors, Tynan quickly became known for his unique voice and irresistible appeal. Following his mother’s advice to always follow your dreams, Tynan decided to launch a solo career, and has achieved the fame and adoration that could have existed only in the farthest reaches of his dreams.

Tynan’s singing offered the gentlest consolation at the funeral of President Ronald Reagan in the summer of 2004, when an international TV audience of more than 35 million heard him sing “Amazing Grace” and Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” at the personal invitation of Nancy Reagan. Ronan is also famous for his performances of “God Bless America” at Yankee Stadium during the seventh-inning stretch, which he says have been nothing short of unforgettable. In 2006 he started an affiliation with the Buffalo Sabres hockey team and has performed “God Bless America” at many of their games.

Ronan’s ability to simultaneously console and inspire is well-documented. In the wake of 9/11, the men and women of the New York Police Department and New York Fire Department and their families have been able to count on Ronan Tynan’s abiding concern and beautiful voice. Ronan has performed at benefits and memorial services for New York’s Finest and Bravest, and his singing softened the sorrow of many in the wake of the tragedy.

Of course, there have been plenty of joyous moments in Ronan’s career as well. In the spring of 2004, the Belmont Stakes got off to a rollicking start when Tynan—a passionate horseman himself—christened the race with a ringing rendition of “New York, New York.” This is of particular interest marking the first time ever in Belmont’s 30-year history that a singer was invited to perform live as they traditionally play the version recorded by Frank Sinatra. Tynan has performed for countless dignitaries worldwide including the wedding of New York’s former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to Judith Nathan on the grounds of Gracie Mansion. His voice also brightened the 80th birthday celebration of former President George H.W. Bush in the summer of 2004 in Houston.

In the spring of 2005, Ronan released his self-titled debut album, which began a new era in his career. “I think it shows a greater versatility than any other album I’ve done,” Tynan has said. “I wanted to sing a greater variety of music and spread my wings a bit, make a move out of the classic ‘Irish tenor’ vein.” The album contains the heartfelt “Passing Through,” which honors Ronan’s mother, whose vibrant spirit has been taken away by the long night of Alzheimer’s disease. Ronan debuted #2 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover Chart, just behind Josh Groban, and was the 8th best-selling classical crossover album of 2005. It also reached #2 on the World Album Chart and peaked at #9 on the Contemporary Christian Chart. His career has also been well-documented with appearances on Primetime Live, Good Morning America, the Hour of Power, 700 Club, Fox & Friends and many other high-profile television shows.

Ronan sang at the White House Governors’ Ball at the invitation of President and Mrs. Bush in February, 2007, and in 2008 returned to the White House to sing at the St. Patrick’s Day Reception attended by members of the U.S. and Irish governments. He performed during the Concert of Hope prior to the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium in April, 2008. He is currently in the recording stages of two upcoming CD releases, one an all-Irish CD, and a second collection of songs performed at his concerts and requested by fans throughout the world. In 2007 due to popular demand, he released a DVD of his motivational speech: Hitting the High Notes, Living Life to the Fullest.

Tynan in Paralympics

Though Ronan enjoyed singing as a boy, he did not seriously consider formal voice study until he was 33, when he was well into his residency as a physician. His quick success is a typical development in a life of extraordinary achievement. Born with lower limb disability that threatened to sideline him throughout his childhood, Tynan was still “as wild as a March hare” when he was a growing boy, riding horses and racing motorcycles. When he was twenty, his legs had to be amputated below the knee after an auto accident caused serious complications. Just weeks after the operation, he was climbing up the steps of his college dorm, and within a year, he was winning gold medals in the Paralympics as a multitalented athlete. Between 1981 and 1984, Tynan amassed eighteen gold medals and fourteen world records of which he still holds nine.

The determination instilled in Ronan by his parents, a diminutive couple with gigantic ambitions for their son, soon propelled him to conquer a whole new field. Tynan became the first disabled person ever admitted to the National College of Physical Education. He later became a full-fledged medical doctor, specializing in orthopedic sports injuries, with a degree from prestigious Trinity College.

Ronan won both the John McCormack Cup for Tenor Voice and the BBC talent show Go For It less than one year after beginning the study of voice. The following year, he won the International Operatic Singing

Competition in Maumarde, France. He made his operatic debut as Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, and cut his teeth on the concert repertoire in performances of Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’sElijah, Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. In 1998, Tynan joined Anthony Kearns and John McDermott (later Finbar Wright) as The Irish Tenors, an instant worldwide sensation. His autobiography Halfway Home was published in February of 2002.

R Tynan 2012 Patriots Playoff Game

Ronan is one of the most sought after motivational speakers in the U.S., presenting nearly 50 speeches annually for major international corporations and organizations.

The big Irishman has a special relationship with American audiences now. “America is powerful and intense, and it begs you to take it on,” Tynan marvels. “If you do that and do it right, it will give you absolutely everything you want. The thing I love about America is that there are so many people who want you to do well. They will you to do well. They encourage you, and they rejoice in your success. That’s a great virtue. I think Americans are fantastic people, amazing,” he says. And while Tynan claims that America has given him so much more than he’ll ever be able to give back, those who have attended his concerts, basking in the stirring beauty of his music and rolling with laughter at his self-effacing humor, may well just have to disagree.

December NKY Band of the Month – Doghouse

Willis Music Florence is proud to have Doghouse as our NKY Band of the Month.

Like them on Facebook for a 10% discount on your purchase.

Doghouse started in 2000, when four Northern Kentucky friends (Chuck Davis, Paul Riesenberg, Tom Schulte and Dick Stewart) started jamming. It became a frequent occurrance and started talk about playing at parties. We needed a bass player and stole the bass player (Ric Thelen) from Mr. Grumpy, a band with deity status in Maysville, KY, which was destined for break-up. The band played a grade school reunion in Nov. 2000 under the name Beer Nuts, without Tom. This was followed with a performance at St. Tim’s in Union, KY with Tom.

The band had it’s first real gig under the name Doghouse (short for Doghouse Dick and the Instigators) at Southern Lanes in Alexandria, KY on March 31st, 2001. The band played many parties that summer, and started playing some bars on a regular basis. In the summer of 2002, the band parted ways with Tom, to become a full-force four-piece.

In May of 2006, Paul Riesenberg decided to leave the Northern KY area for sunny Clearwater Florida, and so departed the band. But Paul was nice enough to give us a little notice and to our great fortune, we found Chris Moriconi, who plays great drums and isn’t too bad of a guy either. On 5/25/2006, we had a farewell and hello gig, where Paul played for half the night and then Chris play the second half, with both playing at the same time for a few songs.

In July of 2010, Chuck Davis decided the rigors of the road, touring with Doghouse was just too much. He left the band but again was nice enough to give us a little notice and we were lucky enough to find Tim Waters, who has some great vocals and plays guitar and keyboards rather well.

We’re also glad to welcome back Jim ‘Bobby’ Oaks to the pack to take pictures, help with sound and lights, and all the other things that matter.

Members
Dick Stewart – Lead Guitar, Vocals
Ric Thelen – Bass, Vocals
Chris Moriconi – Drums
Tim Waters – Lead Vocals, Guitar

Florence Band of the Month October – Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass

Willis Music Florence is happy to have Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass as our October band of the month!

Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass is a driving, five piece bluegrass band established in Cincinnati, OH during the 1960’s. Vernon’s years of playing both banjo and guitar with the greats of bluegrass have honed his skills as an entertainer and make him uniquely qualified to define the traditional bluegrass sound of the Appalachian Grass. He began his professional career at the age of 15 playing banjo with Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys. He has since played with Walt Hensley, Jimmy Martin, Jim McCall, James Monroe, Mac Wiseman, and Scott Stoneman. Vernon was also a founding member of the Bluegrass Pardners of Wheeling Jamboree fame and his banjo work with the Easterners is well remembered.

Through the years, Vernon has made several appearances on the Grand Ole Opry stage. He appeared playing banjo with both Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys and with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys. When the Appalachian Grass was invited to perform at the Opry with Vernon as band leader, singer and guitarist, Vernon became one of the few who have been on that stage as a banjoist, a singer, and a guitarist.

Vernon has recorded many projects with Appalachian Grass that feature both his unique banjo style and his vocals and guitar work. Vernon’s matchless rhythm guitar is the bedrock for wife Kitty’s two fiddle instrumental recordings. During the 1970s, Vernon was a staff musician at Jewel Recording Studio and has contributed banjo and/or rhythm guitar tracks to innumerable recording sessions for entertainers such as Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Skinner, Charlie Moore, Rusty York, Lonnie Mack, Sid Campbell, JD Jarvis, Hylo Brown, and Bobby Grove.

Over the years, Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass has played concerts, festivals, fairs, colleges, radio, television, and exclusive nightclubs across the United States and Canada. In 1998, Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass won the CAMMY award for Best Bluegrass Band in the Cincinnati – Tri-State Area. The band’s exploits even include the grand opening dedication of an historic cemetery!

As emcee, lead singer, and rhythm guitar player, Vernon McIntyre infuses the Appalachian Grass with the warmth and spontaneity of a small family gathering even when playing for thousands of fans. He combines bluegrass history and stories with showmanship and humor to deliver top notch entertainment. Vernon’s wife, Kitty McIntyre, brings to the group some of the best bluegrass fiddling that you can hear. Audiences always enjoy her energetic performances as well as her trick fiddling act. Known for the quality of their singing, the group’s vocals are a blend of smooth and intricate harmonies that are a delight to hear. Hard-driving banjo by Robert Campbell, mandolin by Wayne Haddix, and upright bass by Tammy Powers round out the Appalachian Grass sound.

With Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass on stage you’re sure to get old-fashioned entertainment at its best!

Check them out at Willis Music Florence on October 15 at 7pm!

Music Therapy With Melodic Connections

Starting at the beginning of the year, we have had the opportunity to work with the wonderful people at Melodic Connections. Melodic Connections DayMelodic Connections is a music therapy program, and they have been having a class in our Kenwood store every week since March. The class is set up as a “Career Module”, helping the students learn what it takes to work in the music business. We have worked on many things from cleaning band instruments, selling pianos, making change, and more.

Over the past few weeks we have been working on something that is really fun- assembling a drum set to put on display at the store!
Melodic Connections putting drum set together

We started out by learning how to put the set together, everything from assembling drum heads to attaching the cymbals. We worked on using teamwork to give each person a specific job, so that the whole group could work together!
Melodic connections
Next, we talked about what it takes to sell the drum set! We all made a sample flyer and price tag and choose from them all to see which one we thought was the best.

Our Kenwood location does not stock drum sets, so that means it was time for a road trip! Melodic Connections arrived at our Eastgate location and got straight to work- loading the drum set into the store, deciding where it should go, putting it together, and placing the price tag. It was a great day! Again, we love working with Melodic Connections- they remind us every week that we work in the best industry around!
Melodic Connections Day

You can check out this cool timelapse video of the students from Melodic Connections from that day!

Florence Band of the Month – Stonehaus Trail

stone 2

Stonehaus Trail is a Cover band located in Northern Kentucky that plays at local bars, Private Parties and weddings! The name Stonehaus Trail came from a little place in Melbourne, KY that we had to pass when going to band practice out our drummer Tommy Brewer’s dad’s house. The name of the place is actually Stonehouse Trail but all five members of the band have German in their ancestry so we changed it to Stonehaus Trail. We incorporate fun upbeat music but it is not uncommon to hear rare jams like Cortez the killer (Neil Young), Little Sister (Elvis) and No Excuses (Alice in Chains) come out of our setlist.

Willis and Moeller Music Welcome Fender Supro Amps

LEARN ALL ABOUT THE SUPRO AMP.

Wills and Moeller Music proudly welcome Supro Amps to our West Chester and Lexington stores. These legendary amps are a tone freak’s dream. they are small, compact, low wattage, class A tube amps that deliver a huge sound. For those of you that have never heard of Supro all you need to know is that you have heard them, even if you didn’t know it. These are the amps that legendary Chicago blues players used in the 50’s and 60’s. They were originally low cost amps that were work horses and were everywhere. Their unique circuitry allowed them to achieve a great tone that was utilized by great players like Jimi Hendrix, Link Wray, David Bowie and Dan Auerbach. The most famous user however was Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. In 1968, Page used a Tele plugged into a customized 1 x 12 Supro combo amp to record all of the guitar parts on Led Zeppelin’s debut album. The solo to Stairway to Heaven was played on a Supro. The great irony is that Supro went out of business during that same year!

Supro Amp Image

Supro was reborn in 2013 and now you can achieve that same great tone. The signature element of a Supro amp is its “Class-A” power section, which maintains remarkable clarity and dynamics when overdriven. This gritty mid-range sound is the original alternative to Fender… you could call it “the other white meat” of classic American tone! Every element of our Supro reissue amps has been designed from the ground up to bring this long lost, holy-grail amp to musicians at a working players price. The Blue Rhino Hide tolex was specially made, the cabinetry is vintage-correct, the speakers are totally unique, the transformers are custom and the sound is 100% authentic Supro. Supro reissue amps are hand assembled in Port Jefferson, NY, USA.

I plugged an American Elite Fender Shawbucker Strat into the Saturn Reverb the night they came in. No effects, just guitar, cable, amp. I plugged into the 1+2 input, turned on a bit of reverb, and turned it all the way up. With the bridge humbucker selected instantly I had that classic ‘Whole Lotta Love” tone. Even with the volume on 10 though it was loud but comfortably loud. The kind of tone that if you put a SM57 in front of it you’d have all the amp you will need.

Loud enough for you to overcome the drummer on stage for you, but still not ear splitting and workable for a sound system. Back the volume off on the guitar and switch to the neck single coil, and you get the perfect blues tone. play lightly its as clean as a whistle, play hard it breaks up nicely and sings. I plugged a couple of different overdrive pedals In and achieved the same kind of tone at a lower volume. I added a phaser to the mix and just fell in love. A tele plugged into it got that nice Brad Paisley like tone.

Stop by and try one out with your favorite guitar and effects today.

Florence – July Band of the Month – Bruce Menefield

menefieldSaxophonist Bruce Menefield speaks out of his own personal experience.  His career has been marked by his ability to mix talented musicians into exciting ensembles that have spun off into independent artists.  The groups he has developed are known to keep a “hard groove” and deliver a musically strong message.

The “sweet” saxophone sounds that Bruce Menefield constructs are colored with gospel, blues, bebop and funk, allowing the versatile sax range of his tenor, soprano, alto and baritone instruments to be heard succinctly and clearly.  Positioned to be a Soloist, his CD’s are written compositions of creative instrumental variety stylistically designed to be performed “in the moment.”

An intricate part of Cincinnati’s jazz heritage, Bruce has performed among some of the best in jazz. such as  Hugh “Peanuts”Whalum, Clark Terry,  Ronnie Laws and John Blake. He was one of the “Four Tenors” in a landmark concert at the Hyatt in 2005 which included a frontline of Billy Harper, Bennie Maupin and Edwin “Eddie” Bayard.  Bruce has produced many live concerts, including a 3-year run of the “It’s Commonly Jazz” series at Jordan Crossing, an annual free event for Cincinnati’s own.  He highlighted his series with the likes of McCoy Tyner and Hank Crawford.

In 2008, Bruce Menefield’s Omni Works Music was founded to provide educational and performance services that would continue the rich legacy of jazz as an African American cultural contribution to our society.  A studio producer, he has written, recorded and produced his own music under his record label, Black Sax Records with his last CD entitled “More Steps.”

His extensive life experience in the field of music has enhanced his understanding and acceptance of the urge to create as an outcome that belongs to God.

Clarinet & Saxophone Workshop June 4 2016

Willis Music is excited to collaborate with D’Addario to present a Clarinet & Saxophone Workshop on Saturday, June 4, 2017 from 11am-3pm. Krista’s clinics focus on tone production, air support, and reed care. She also enjoys showing the value of focused, efficient practice techniques and encourages an open discussion of all things clarinet between herself and the students she encounters.

Krista Weiss is a freelance clarinetist and teacher in Indiana and Ohio. Through her work with D’Addario, Ms. Weiss has traveled to dozens of schools across the Midwest to give clinics on clarinet fundamentals and equipment. She also currently serves as principal clarinet of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and second clarinet of the Richmond Indiana Symphony. An active freelancers, Ms. Weiss has recently performed with the Cincinnati SYmphony, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Atlantic Classical Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, indianapolis Opera, South Bend Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and New World Symphony in Miami, Florida. Ms. Weiss also enjoys a career as a studio musician and has performed in dozens of recordings for Hal Leonard Corporation.

This is a great way to gain motivation for the summer. We hope all woodwind players will make plans to attend.

How Does A Grand Piano Work?

If you’ve ever seen a world-class pianist playing a great piece of music, you might agree that they are possibly the world’s best musician.  It takes amazing physical, intellectual, and emotional brilliance to play such a complex instrument in such a captivating way, and only a small percentage of the world’s pianists are up to the job.  One of my personal favorites is Yuja Wang.

But it’s not just the musician who makes the music sound so fantastic: the instrument plays a huge part too.

Let’s take a closer look inside a piano and find out how it works!  How does a piano make sound?
A piano sounds quite unlike any other instrument and, if you heard it on the radio, you’d probably never guess how it was making a noise. The confusing thing about a piano is that it’s two different kinds of instrument in one: it’s a string instrument, because the sounds are made with strings, but it’s also a percussion instrument (like a drum) because the strings make sound when something hits them. Listen to the music of a composer like Bartok and you’ll often hear the piano being played percussive manner, almost beating like a drum.

So what happens when you press the key of a piano? The key is actually a wooden lever, a bit like a seesaw but much longer at one end than at the other. When you press down on a key, the opposite end of the lever (hidden inside the case) jumps up in the air, forcing a small felt-covered hammer to press against the piano strings, making a musical note. At the same time, at the extreme end of the lever behind the hammer, another mechanical part called a damper is also forced up into the air. When you release the key, the hammer and the damper fall back down again. The damper sits on top of the string, stops it vibrating, and brings the note rapidly to an end.

When the hammer strikes the strings, it vibrates, sets air molecules in motion and sends the sounds of the strings out toward your ears. To make the sounds louder, there is a large piece of wood mounted underneath them, called the soundboardWhen the strings vibrate, the soundboard also vibrates in sympathy  resonance. The soundboard effectively amplifies the strings so they are loud enough to hear.

If you’ve ever wondered why pianos are such a funny shape, that’s easy to answer.  Remember that they’re string instruments.  Lower notes need longer strings than higher notes, so the bass strings for the low notes on the left-hand side of the keyboard need to be much longer than the treble strings for the high notes on the right-hand side. That’s why the case is longer on the left than on the right and why it has that funny curved rim.  In fact, the strings on the left are so long that they cross over, on top of the middle and treble strings to save space.

Since each note can have up to three strings, it turns out that there are well over 230 strings inside a piano, each one stretched really tight. To stop the strings from collapsing the entire piano inwards, the rim and case are reinforced by a huge, heavy cast iron plate. The plate sits just above the sound board and large metal holes around its edge allow the sound to come up through it.

Take  a quick tour of how a grand piano works.  Check out the following video from the science channel.
