As Close To An Original ’58 As You Can Get!

The 1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard Plain Top VOS guitar begins with a solid mahogany back and carved plain maple top. The one-piece mahogany neck is topped with a gorgeous rosewood fretboard that’s adorned with acrylic trapezoid inlays with shape and color true to the original. Early ’50s rounded neck profile delivers the vintage feel players love. BurstBucker 1 and 2 pickups deliver famous vintage Les Paul tone.

In an effort to jump start the steadily declining sales of the Les Paul model, Gibson abandoned the familiar gold finish and used a translucent, cherry sunburst finish which showed off the figured maple tops that were often used on Les Pauls. The renamed Les Paul Standard made its debut in 1958.

Vintage Original Spec series instruments receive a special nitro-cellulose finish treatment yielding the patina of a gently-aged vintage guitar while handcrafting enhances comfort and playability. Each VOS model has a solid mahogany back; historically accurate long-neck tenon for strength and sustain; and period-correct neck profile, hardware, and electronics.

April Newsletter Highlights GUITAR

Guitar News April 2013

D’Addario’s NEW XL Nickel Wound Balanced Tension Strings – Responding to consumer demand, D’Addario XL Nickel Wound Balanced Tension sets have been optimized to have a comparable tension string-to-string allowing for greater dynamic control and a more evenly balanced effort while fretting, bending, strumming and picking on guitar, as well as plucking, slapping and bending on bass. Comprised of mathematically optimized string gauge combinations, each balanced tension set was extensively tested with players and experts in order to insure not only that they were balanced, but that they retained all of the inherent properties expected of a D’Addario XL nickel wound set.

“For years, D’Addario’s been dedicated to helping players find the best set for them. As far back as 10 years ago, we published a String Tension Guide to educate players on the many factors that determine the actual and perceived string tension on your instrument,” commented Brian Vance, Director of Product Management at D’Addario. “This guide has led to hundreds of inquiries through email and social media each year from players who have questions or problems to solve related to string gauges or tensions. Our new Balanced Tension sets address the needs of those players and reaffirm consumers that we are listening.”

The Balanced Tension sets are another example of D’Addario’s dedication to inspiring all musicians to reach for higher levels of performance and creativity.

Memphis The Musical is Coming & We’ve Got Tickets!

“Memphis” is set in the places where rock and roll was born in the 1950s: the seedy nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of the musically-rich Tennessee city. With an original score by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan, it tells the fictional story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good ole’ local boy with a passion for R&B music and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer that he meets one fateful night on Beale Street. Despite the objections of their loved ones (Huey’s close-minded mama and Felicia’s club owner brother), they embark on a dangerous affair. As their careers rise, the relationship is challenged by personal ambition and the pressures of an outside world unable to accept their love.

This Tony award winning show for Best Musical comes to the Kentucky Center April 2-7 and we’ve got 4 pairs of tickets to give away. To enter, go to our Facebook page (Willis MusicSuperstore) & post a picture of you holding something saying Memphis. Winners will be chosen from those who post and notified via Facebook message on March 29th.

Even Legends Started With The Piano

The legendary Eddie Van Halen said, “The piano is a universal instrument. If you start there, learn your theory and how to read, you can go on to any other instrument.” A solid foundation in theory opens doors to easily expand the number of instruments you play and efficiently expand your repertoire. The piano is one of the most accessible instruments to vastly expand your theory knowledge. The piano has the capability to express the multitude and diverse aspects of music in its mere 88 keys. The transition from piano to all band and most orchestral instruments becomes learning the instrument, not requiring the labor of learning new aspects of theory, as many other transitions can require. As the exclusive Steinway & Sons dealer for the Cincinnati / Dayton we have the opportunity to provide the World’s Finest Piano for you and your child to become a truly fine musician…whatever instrument is the goal.

“Music Makes Us Healthier, Happier and Smarter”

This is a definite MUST READ about the benefits of music! Below is a small excerpt from the story.

“Ask just about anyone, at any age, and they will tell you they enjoy music. What music does for us, however, goes immensely beyond entertainment. The countless benefits of making music affect the body, the mind and the soul. Over the past few decades there has been an accumulating wealth of research that supports what musicians have always known – music makes us healthier, happier and smarter…”

Tone To Tantalize At Your Fingertips!

NOW IN STOCK!!! The USA built pedals may look small, but they’ll give your amp a MESA/Boogie flavor for less than $200!

TONE BURST: This Boost/Overdrive offers a virtually transparent gain range usually associated with “clean” boost pedals. However, the TONE-BURST has enough gain to boost your guitar to the threshold of clip and slightly beyond, making it far more useful for a variety of applications. It’s incredibly powerful for adding boost, drive and/or EQ to any guitar and amp combination. Whether using it as a utility to boost the output of single coils to match a humbucker or as a subtle overdrive when a standard overdrive may be too much, the TONE-BURST is an incredibly useful and expressive pedal that makes the best things sound even better!

THROTTLE BOX: This distortion serves up all genres of ROCK with cut and aggression, but retains the signature warmth and organic sonic quality found in all our instruments. While its main strengths lie in higher-gain sounds, it’s also versatile and the lower gain options shouldn’t be overlooked for classic rock or howling blues. It also features a unique Mid Cut that scoops out midrange to produce the signature Boogie “V” EQ-curve that so many artists have employed in our amps to create the world’s heaviest guitar tones!

GRID SLAMMER: This overdrive pedal that produces a variable boost in gain over a wide range with a classic, guitar-centric midrange bump that enhances many different playing styles. It’s a true overdrive “specialist” that covers an amazing array of what many top players consider the most expressive and musical ranges of overdrive. From sweet, subtle breakup to a harmonically smoldering overdrive that can both sting and sing, the GRID SLAMMER sets a new bar in legendary overdrive!

FLUX DRIVE: This is an overdrive for those who want more of all the best things from an overdrive! It has more liquid gain and enhanced sustain that easily feeds into rich harmonic overtones making it incredibly addictive and inspiring to play, especially to enhance a crunch or higher gain amp channel! It also offers a more complete tone-shaping network with individual Treble and Bass controls. This architecture makes the FLUX-DRIVE a more complete preamp with added versatility beyond that of most overdrive pedals.

Willis Music’s partnership with Steinway and Sons

In August 2012, Willis Music began a partnership with Steinway and Sons.  As a result of this partnership, Willis Music is currently the only authorized dealer of Steinway pianos in the Greater Cincinnati area.  I recently had the opportunity to travel to New York City to be introduced to this American institution.  It was a great opportunity to be able to meet the Steinway family.  I had the chance to tour the factory where Steinway pianos are built, the same way they have been constructed for over 150 years.  I was truly amazed at the artistry and pride that goes into each piano they create.  Each component is carefully planned, crafted by hand, and held to the highest standards.  The people who work in the factory take enormous pride in the pianos they create.  This pride is evident in the unmatched sound quality of a Steinway piano.  The Eastgate Mall location of Willis Music has a fine selection of grand pianos available for you to come in and experience the quality and craftsmanship of these instruments.

The first step in building a Steinway piano is the “rim bending.” This amazing process involves a team of people working together to make the case of a piano from hardwood maple.  This team works to mold the maple into the shape of what will eventually become a Steinway piano.

Kevin Cranley, NAMM Chairman & Willis Music President, in Russia for new Trade Show

Inaugural NAMM Musikmesse Russia Show

NAMM [joined] Messe Frankfurt, producers of Musikmesse and Music China, to co-produce two new trade shows in Russia. Both organizations are working to grow new markets and encourage professional development and music education in the region.

The new shows, NAMM Musikmesse Russia and Prolight + Sound NAMM Russia, [took] place in Moscow’s Expo Centre May 16–19, 2012. NAMM Musikmesse Russia [focused] on the musical instrument sector, while the Prolight + Sound NAMM show concurrently [represented] pro audio, lighting and event technology.”

Kevin Cranley talks about his experience…

Kevin: “I had the opportunity to present at the NAMM Musikmesse Russia Show. Working with a translator provides a unique challenge to presenting but the translator was great and the audience was responsive.  This was the first year that the convention was in Moscow and the attendance exceeded our targets.  I look forward to attending and presenting in Moscow again next year.”

Kevin: “Here I am with some of the NAMM team (From left to right: Kevin, Dominique, Joe, Betty and Dan) on the Moskva River.  The City of Moscow was named after the river. Directly across from the river is Gorky Park, which was made famous in the US by the 1983 movie based on the novel of the same name.  As you might be able to tell from this picture, the weather was great and unusually warm for mid May; it was in the mid 80’s.  ”

Kevin: “…In front of the ‘Russian White House’, of course that’s not the real name but it is what the people we spoke to call it.  The english translation of the name of the building is, ‘House of the Government of the Russian Federation.’ It can also be the home of the Russian President, who can choose there or the Kremlin to live.  The building sits on the Krasnopresnenskaya embankment on the Moskva River.  Here I am with Joe, NAMM President and Betty, NAMM Director of International Affairs.”

Kevin Cranley: Willis Music President, NAMM Chairman & Music Education Advocate

Kevin Cranley visits Washington D.C.

“NAMM and a group of it’s members venture yearly to Washington to meet directly with our Congressman and their staffs.  It’s vitally important that we keep access to music in our schools for all children.  Research consistently shows that children involved in a music program do better with their studies, are more motivated, work better in teams and develop their imaginations and creativity.  Simply put music participation leads to a more fulfilling and happier life.  This year we were very fortunate to be joined by musicians Bernie Williams (former NY Yankee great) and Scott Grimes (actor from ER, Band of Brothers and Robin Hood)”

Willis Music President Kevin Cranley in Frankfurt, Germany

The Frankfurt Musikmesse and Pro Light & Sound Expo “… is the world’s most international fair for musical instruments, sheet music, music production and marketing, and has been the foremost meeting place for the musical-instrument industry for over 25 years.”

Willis Music President and NAMM Chairman Kevin Cranley talks about his current travels:

“One of the benefits of being the Chairman of NAMM is the interesting travel.  Musikmesse is the largest music show in Europe.  The weather has been fantastic, mid 60’s and blue sky’s.  We have met with many interesting people and Betty Haywood and I were interviewed by a Polish Internet News crew.  Saturday I leave for New York and the MTNA convention.  We have Willis composers Naoko Ikeda and Eric Baumgartner presenting on Monday and then I leave on a train for Washington DC to lobby for music in the schools.”
