May Northern Kentucky Band of the Month – Brandon Coleman Quartet
Having been called a “wonderful composer” and “sophisticated player” as well as “one of the most unique guitar voices to emerge over the last decade”, Brandon Coleman is the Midwest’s foremost jazz guitarist.
Based out of Cincinnati, OH, Coleman regularly performs with his groups Brandon Coleman Quartet and Trio as well as the Cleveland/NYC-based Sam Blakeslee Quintet amongst countless other projects.
Drawing his inspiration from his musical idols–which range from Shorter and Coltrane all the way to Zappa, Messiaen and Murail–Coleman composes and performs very cinematic and personal music which always has a story to tell the listener.
He has performed at many notable venues and festivals, including–but not limited to–The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Bop Stop, BluJazz+, Bar Next Door, Shrine, Merriman’s Playhouse, the first annual Loja Jazz Festival (2012) in Loja, Ecuador, the 2014 CBGB Festival in NYC, and the 2014 Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest.
2013 saw the release of his debut quartet album, Decisions. Met with great reviews and radio play, Decisions set the tone for the voice of the Brandon Coleman Quartet, an interactive and thematic quartet with roots firmly in the modern tradition of jazz music.
Brandon Coleman is also a teacher at our Florence location.

So being three quasi theory geeks we then began talking about which, if any, scale the guitarist from the original band that did this particular song would use. We came to the conclusion that there isn’t one really, confirmed by a quick google search for articles about it. It’s really just the chromatic scale and notes that “kind of” fit around the rhythm of the song, although we were initially intrigued about some talk of “the Devil’s Scale”, that turned out to be a bust and really just a reference to tritones.
So what is your favorite scale to play in? Pentatonic? Minor? Major? Lydian Flat 5? No right or wrong answer here, just let’s hear it? Or are you one of those people like these guitarists that prefer to NOT purposely use a scale, or just really have no idea what I’m talking about? That’s ok too.
This reminds me and brings up another point. If you’re one of those that has no idea what I’m talking about but don’t want to be, we have one of the best teaching staffs around. Lessons are where we all learned our scales and how to use them. It takes a lot of the frustration and what feels like literally reading Greek out of the process. We just recently scheduled our 300th student here at Moeller of Willis Music West Chester! Schedule lessons today and help us get to 400!
We have a handy website to help you out. It’s called looking4lessons.com. Simply click on the link and search for the instrument and area you want (use 45069 as the zip code if you’re looking for our store) and find the teacher that’s right for you. Each teacher has a bio and their rates and times available. Hope to see you soon!

We’re all about giving musicians some glory here at Willis Music, and one of our most popular annual events is Shred Fest. This year we had 21 guitarists post 60 second videos of themselves “shredding”. The top 7 with the most “likes” came into our store on September 28, were split into 2 groups and played live in our auditorium for a packed house of guitar worshipers. Judging for this portion of the contest was done by 2012 Shred Fest winner Chris Alia and Louisville musician and educator, Brian White. The winners from those groups, Monte Phillips and Cheyenne Powell, then went head-to-head against each other in hopes of winning a brand new B.C. Rich Flying V guitar. Judging for this portion of the event was based entirely on audience response. At the end of a spectacular guitar battle, Cheyenne Powell of local band Overload walked away the winner. Thanks very much to everyone who played, voted and came out to support musicians who’ve worked incredibly hard on their abilities. 2014′s Shred Fest will be the first to feature a backing track entry video, so start prepping now!
The final 7 left to right are:
Sean Cook, Monte Phillips, Ryan Preston, Cody Weigleb, Garrett Morton, Mark Doss, Cheyenne Powell
